Thursday Cheers and Jeers

The good, the bad, and the downright fugly from the past week:

Cheers
  • The Boston Bruins. The B's sent their long-suffering fans into delirium by winning their first Stanley Cup since 1972 last night.
  • Tyler Seguin. The second overall pick in last year's draft (thanks to the Toronto Maple Leafs) wins the Cup in his first NHL season. Not bad!
  • Only one more sleep until CFL football returns to Mosaic Stadium. There's nothing wrong with that!
  • The exceptional individual who came up with the idea for jalapeno-flavoured mustard and bagels. Arriba!
Jeers
  • The lower life forms (I won't call them hockey fans) who trashed downtown Vancouver after the Canucks' loss last night. Stay classy, Van City!
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs. The buds are the only original six NHL franchise to not win the Stanley Cup in the last 18 years. It's 44 years and counting for them!
  • Mother Nature (again). I see that rain is forecast right through the weekend. This is getting really, really old.
  • The complete douche bags who think it's okay to berate some 13 year old kid who is trying to make a couple extra bucks by umpiring a little league baseball game. Get a life, or get back to the trailer park!
Got anything or anyone to add to either category? Let us know!

I agree with your cheers and jeers - especially the sports-related ones.

Cheers: Rob Brown, from CTV, who became a hero last night during that mess in Vancouver. It may not have been the brightest thing to do, to walk into that mess like that, but it was gutsy. And he probably made his career there.

Cheers to the umps, refs, etc., of the younger leagues, who do this for very little money or NO money. They have to put up with a lot of crap. They're a lot braver than I could be. Probably takes as much courage as Rob Brown's coverage last night.

Alynn, the photographer who took pictures of my dogs for me -- a wonderful job! Despite one dog being blind and deaf, and the other wanting to race throughout her home... the pictures look great!

Jeers: SaskEnergy, who changed my gas meter, and now my water heater isn't working. Gotta call them now, like I don't have enough to do.

Woodticks. Need I say more?

And I just have to say, I feel sorry for the REAL Canucks fans who had nothing to do with the riots, who now have to put up with the stigma those drunken idiots have given them, their city, and their team.

We play in different leagues, but the issue is the same. If you do not have Umpires you do not have a game period.

The worst are coaches at the 10-11 year old age group constantly on those kids about balls/strikes, rules interpretation etc. When these kids umpiring quit at 12 or 13 that impacts the higher levels of baseball the same as when players quit.

There needs to be a zero tolerance policy in place. NO discussion of balls/strikes, and Umpires should be encouraged to toss coaches and fans who start this garbage. The other side of it is if a kid is umpiring these leagues need to make sure they have an Adult present on the bases to maintain order.

It is no coincidence Baseball is a dying sport in Regina.
