Friday thoughts

An assortment of thoughts from a water-logged brain:

  • The choice between Taylor Hall and Tyler Seguin for top pick in the NHL draft is sort of like picking between a (Seguin) Cadillac (solid, well-built, stylish and reliable), and a used (Hall) Ferrari (exciting as hell, but you're not entirely sure what it will do a thousand miles from now).
  • I think the Oilers will go for the Ferrari with the first overall pick, even though they could probably use a centre more than a winger.
  • I sure hope Pats' sniper Jordan Weal hears his name called early at the draft.
  • The latest rumour has Weal being selected with the last pick of the first round by Chicago.
  • Chicago? Isn't that the team that "Brokeback Brouwer" kid plays for?
  • It's interesting how selective some memories are about certain infamous incidents in local radio history.
  • So, does this week's roster moves mean Brent Hawkins and Luc Mullinder will start at defensive end when the Riders host Montreal next Thursday night?
  • If the Riders encounter injury troubles along the offensive line, will Kelly Bates come off the 9-game injury list early? Don't bet against it.
  • The North Regina Little League season comes to a merciful end this weekend.
  • Our Major A Twins take on the Red Sox in the league final. We only need to win one game, while the Sox have to beat us twice.
  • So, do I start our best pitcher in game one and ride him to the finish line? Or save him for a potential second game?
  • Is this the kind of stress Cito has to deal with?
  • So, on the basis of all the rain we've received, how bad are the mosquitos going to be at this time next week? Yikes.
  • Only 28 more days until a southern Ontario holiday with the J-man. Only 28 more days...

If you only need the one win you go for broke and go with your horse. Just don't do a Grady Little, and ride him too long. Also if you are thin at pitching for the second game if need be, then split it up and go by committee. Take all the pressure off them, and put it on the defense to make the plays behind them. Just as long as they cut down on walks, all they have to do is serve up ground balls and make the easy outs.

No it's the kind of stress "Obama" has to deal with. How to win games when you only have 3 players with Batting Averages over .300, and OBP of 60%. Try winning when you have 8 players with averages around .150 and OBP's of below 40%. The math doesn't add up so take the pressure off yourself, and enjoy the sunshine. In my case I ain't winning a thing this year.

That's what I was thinking of as well. Go with our best arm in the first game, and then split up the work in the second game.

Fortunately, we have more pitching that the other team - so if got down to our 3rd, 4th or even 5th best pitchers, we'd be in much better shape than them.

Which is precisely how we ended up winning the league last year. We took a beating in game one of the final, and they had no pitching left for the second game.

Either way... take the team out for ice cream after the game. Jake will remember that more than anything.

Baseball is simple. It will ALWAYS come down to pitching. The team with the most depth wins. They're on these counts now. So if he can go deep, take advantage of that and get as much run support as you can. Then pray you can hold them off in the 5th or 6th.

You got to hit though. So if you only have 1/2 a lineup going it doesn't matter how good he pitches. Get 8 out of your 12 going then you got a chance.
