Thursday Cheers and Jeers

It's that time again, to unleash a torrent of platitudes and criticism. Whattya say I start?

Cheers
  • West Side Pizza. Located in a little strip mall at the corner of Dorothy and Sherwood, the place serves great food. Unfortunately, they no longer deliver to the south end. But, that may change soon (fingers crossed).
  • Venice Tailors (again). They do a great job with mending and alterations, and I got an excellent deal on a couple of dress shirts last week. What's not to love?
  • Regina Pats. Aside from blowing a 3-0 lead in their last outing, the Pats look to be building some momentum. I hope so, anyway.
  • Airport Health Professionals. Chiropractor (and curler extraordinaire) Scott Bitz and the crew do an admirable job trying to keep me from falling completely apart.

Jeers

  • A certain unnamed car dealership (rhymes with Smapital Gourd) whose service department just can't deal with rejection. Beat it, gougers!
  • Rider fans. Not all of them, mind you. Just the ones who are convinced the pending (but still not confirmed) move of Brendan Taman into the general manager's office spells the end of the franchise. Yeah, because the typical fan is such an expert in football operations. Whatever.
  • TSN. The network launches a new app for iPhone users, but nothing for folks with Blackberries. Discrimination, I tell ya!

Cheers:

Kendra Krietemeyer, my dog groomer, who always does a great job on both my dogs, and whom both dogs love.

Willie Cole, for his passionate blog about Weedless Wednesday.

And, while we're talking about Weedless Wednesday, Kelly Pierson, Smokers' Helpline coordinator for Saskatchewan, has been doing a great job, including interviewing Mr. Cole yesterday morning.

Jeers:

Rock Creek Tap & Grill -- the food is great, the staff is wonderful, and the prices are good... BUT they have limited room for large groups, and will not take reservations on Fridays. Tired of having a group of 8 - 10 people shuffled into a corner booth with extra tables.

Hey! More cheers than jeers this week! I must be in a better mood. :)

Jeers-Southland HMV. I swear to god that trained monkeys are better than the staff they have in there. Completely useless!

Jeers;

Go to www.saskjobs.ca How many times can a company like Employment Network Canada post the same job? My girlfriend has applied to that 6 month Crown Corporation job everytime it is put up, and never gets a phone call.

Does anybody know what the hell this company is? We moved to Regina last year because of my transfer, and it's the same job every time they post it.

That sounds like a question for Obama. Paging Obama...

It's usually better to go to the crown corporations' web sites to find information on careers/jobs.

http://www.saskenergy.com/careers/
http://www.recruitingsite.com/csbsites/saskpower/careers.asp
http://www.sasktel.com
http://www.isc.ca

etc.

Here's a good site, too:

http://www.cicorp.sk.ca/

It's the Crown Investment Corporation website. If you look down the righthand side of the page under Links, you'll find links to all the crown corporations.

So here's a question. Since when do crown corps use outside recruitment firms? They all have their own HR departments, although I believe treasury board crowns staff through the public service commission?

I found the job ad. Nowhere does it say it's a provincial crown. Federal, maybe? Although I can't them contracting out HR services either. Weird.

There are scaveng... I mean, there are employment companies who will try to find employees for crown corporations, government, etc., in the hopes of getting a fee from either the hiring institution or -- more likely -- the person getting the job. And since crowns tend to pay better, they can charge a larger commission on a crown/government job than they can on a job for a small business.

That said, crown corporations often hire technical people through staffing firms like EDS, Eagle, etc. If someone's looking for a tech job, though, I'd really scout out the staffing firm first.

What Bev and Pete state is true. They are looking for someone to take to a company and charge a fee if in fact this is a real job. They are scavenging, and they are just putting out an ad for free using the internet. Federal would never use this firm. Provincial Crown maybe for a very short term assignment might do that, but they have large HR divisions. Provincial Depts rely on the PSC, or their own HR staff.

Investigate for yourself. Go to this companies website. Basically they have a bunch of kids working there on the website. This firm also from what I have heard does not have a good reputation amongst key employers in the city. I work for the City of Regina. Our organization's HR Manager fired this place because they did not deliver on what they promised to.

Administrative Assistant - Crown Corporation

I read this blog on Thursdays, but never post comments. I was curious. That is the title of the job they have posted on the internet. You are correct Pete, but in the description it states nothing about being in a Crown. Just our client etc. So what is this thing?

I do know a few of the Rider players worked there. John Chick and Kyle Mitchell, but neither of them stayed very long. My friend said Kyle said it was a total crap hole, and the Owner is this nutcase.

Ha ha I got a call my opinion was required. Small small world. I've seen that company listed on here too, and I can speak on the matter. Bev is on the right track.

Basically this place is a shithole, and I would tread very carefully when doing anything with it. Certainly as a company who has to pay for the service I would not use it. Often the companies in town who are so desparate to find people or have no other options will go there to see if they can drum something out. The list of reputable companies using this place however is drying up.

Having my ear to the ground I thought this was interesting. One company's Executive hires this place to do a search because they can't keep or find employees. He then realizes what a dump the place he works in is, and he uses this company to place him in another company. They agree and place him. Tell me how ethical that is?
