Pats beef up on blueline

Those fans who wanted the Pats to add some veteran toughness on defense will probably like this development:

Pats add a 20 year-old

Regina, Saskatchewan – The Regina Pats have filled their vacant 20 year-old roster spot today by picking up Scott Gabriel off waivers from the Portland Winter Hawks. The 6’5” defenceman had one assist and 21 minutes in penalties in eight games, and was an assistant captain, before he was put on the waiver wire by Portland. Last season, he played in 60 games with a goal, 5 assists and 244 minutes in penalties.

The thing is this Pete; if this guy is brought in to play hockey and does so, this could be a good move. I don't think he was used properly in Portland ie; mainly protecting the youth movement he got turfed for!

He should neutralize the likes of Reich, McCue, Grantham etc. On this team he doesn't have to fight all the time. He can pick his spots where and when needed. His mere presence on the team should let other cheap shoters know if they want to abuse Eberle and Weal, the will be consequences.

If he can play some hockey and be tough on opposing forwards in front of the net, our team just got a lot better.

Where's the Beef?? as they say.

I read now that this kid doesn't want to come here. Evidently he has made his mind up to play in TierII where all the other great 20yr olds end up. he walked out on Portland and has now snubbed the Pats. Maybe that tells you all you need to know. The lingering question is; didin't anybody from the Pats talk to him and get a committment to come here and play. I read where they had never actually talked to him prior to claiming him. It is kind of a black eye on our management.
