Thursday news

Well, the Regina Pats have hired Dale Derkatch as the new head coach, replacing Curtis Hunt. Derkatch is the Pats all-time scoring leader, and coached the Notre Dame Hounds to a provincial midget AAA title last year.

The Riders have announced that Darian Durant will start at quarterback Sunday against the Toronto Argos. Marcus Crandell's hamstring is being given plenty of time to heal, especially in light of Durant's performance the last three games.

The hiring of Derkatch was all about control and everyone in the hockey world knows it. A guy with one Provincial midget AAA title to his name over a Mem cup, coach of the year, world junior and olympian, lifetime .613 winning pct. Gimme a freakin break!!!

It is not Derkatch's fault he was selected. What three year midget coach wouldn't jump at the chance considering the field he was selected over? This experiment will fizzle within two years, mark my words. Derkatch will soon find that Parker will get into his business in a big way like he has always done with his puppet coaches. That is something Habscheid would never put up with the same way Schockey didn't!

Brents overall record is terrible as GM. His playoff record is too pathetic to believe. What owner would keep this guy around for 14 years of delivering nothing?? Wonder wonder. By the time the Derkatch era is over it will be 16 or 17 years of futility. He will soon double the horrible Hicke years (another Pat legend) This guy is a p_ss poor GM. He doesn't want anyone around who know more than him, hence a 43 yr old midget coach. Habscheid has forgot more than Parker will ever know. It is a lot easier to control a rookie midget coach than a seasoned proven no-nonsense winner.

The best years the Pats (with Derkatch) ever had was when the Pinders owned the team, Strum was the GM (best ever GM)who hired top notch coaches and let them win. Each did their job and stayed out of the other guy's junk.

Habscheid is much like Don Hay. Hay would never let Parker mess with his team but then Parker would never hire Hay. He is a proven winner and Brent hates those people. They are so unlike him. We the fans get cheated again by not bringing in a top drawer coach who could take us to the next level quickly. Derkatch will take three years to learn the league but by that time he will be Parker fodder like many more before him.

I was reading Pedersen's blog and the first set of comments were not to happy with the slection. It would appear the delete button is working well by now. I don't envy Derkatch with pressure he will be under. He probably gave up a better job than he is getting.

I'm a long suffering Maple Leafs fan, and I would consider this hiring very similar to when the Leafs passed over GM candidates with proven credentials, and inserted John Ferguson Jr into that post. He was the Asst GM for a go nowhere franchise like St. Louis and the results were predictable. Every year you think the Leafs would make an attempt to improve, but when they hired John Jr you just knew it was about control, and there was no interest in winning because the team makes money.

When John Jr got the job there was no need to blame him, just like there will be no need to blame Derkatch. This team not moving forward rests in one guys lap who could care less. Brent has made millions, and in a couple years he'll make even more when he sells to Sillinger and company. July 24 is the day the Parker's officially threw in the towel when it comes to even giving the perception they are interested in winning.

I couldn't agree more that it is NOT Derkatch's fault. When even Derkatch himself says he was surprised he got hired, I believe he speaks from the heart. He knows the most qualified guy didn't get the job. Top notch companies usually try to hire the best qualified folks, most great sports teams do as well. Parker tries to be clever using terms like "fit" and "direction" I'm calling bull sh-t. The classiest guy in all of this was Habscheid. What about Perkins huh..so much for loyalty. Parker says if he isn't a fit we will get someone else..pretty cavalier don't ya think!

When Vancouver wanted to improve they brought in a winner named Don Hay and the rest is history. I fully expect Chilliwack to get to the League finals long before we do. Russ Parker bought this team as a make work project for his son, he in turn has been a dismal failure as a GM but he has TENURE. I often thought the Hicke years were bad, but the Parker years are worse because we have had more of them. It is has been 25 years since we have been to a League final...mainly Hicke and Parker years. Yes you are right poster, the Parkers did throw in the towel. This little experiment is nothing more than that, and the results are predictable at this point. It is said we have had 10 coaches in 14 years. Derkatch shouldn't like his odds....at least the Leafs will have a better coach and pretty soon Burke. Might be better time sin TO soon.

The perfect scenario would have been to hire both Habscheid and Derkatch. Habscheid should have been hired to be GM/Head Coach with Derkatch hired as Asst Gm/Asst Coach. We would have had the best of both worlds. All Parker would have had to do is sit back and watch the championships come. The problem is he would have had to give up control and really, isn't control what this dubious hiring has been about. Parker has put Derkatch in a no-win situation.

Perkins is the real loser in this. He is being told he won't get the head coach job, but is being asked to swallow his pride and talk with Derkatch and Parker about his role if any, with the Pats. They left this man hanging until this late date so even opps in tier 2 are limited. He may stay because he has to buy groceries, but really even Tery sees the handwriting on the wall.

Yes this organization has thrown in the towel. The bill of good we will be fed is that they are in a rebuilding phase. Isn't that what we just went through? The latest 4 year program fell flat on it's face. A couple of media types will try to say that it's OK because other teams didn't win either. Instead of raising the bar, they will lower it to the level of other under achievers.

Most fans hope the Parker nightmare is over soon. We need to get an ownership group who is willing to bring the best available hockey minds and talent to win championships. Unlike the current regime, leaving ego and arrogance at the door. We need championships not rebuilding cycles.

I'm not saying I agree or disagree, but it's amazing how closely some of the above comments mirror those posted when Kent Austin was hired to coach the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Yes, I know - Austin at least had CFL coaching experience - but the criticisms are remarkably similar.

Now, does that mean I think the Derkatch hiring will turn out the same as Austin's brief tenure back in Regina? Probably not, but I'm not ready to bet against it yet either.

Some comments do resemble those made when Austin came in. When Tillman with two Grey Cup rings already speaks, people tend to listen. A proven winner gets to make those choices and most often they are correct.

When Mr. Parker sports two Memorial Cup rings, people will tend to listen and approve. What's it been, 10 coaches in 14 years?

That's the subtle difference Pete. One is a proven champion builder and one is not!
