Building momentum

Don't look now, but the Regina Pats are starting to put together some impressive performances in the second half of the WHL season. After being the poster children for underachievement in the first half, the Pats have come alive in January. Last night the Queen City Kids jumped out to a 5-0 lead, then held off the Moose Jaw Warriors 6-4 for Regina's third straight win. Pats defenceman Logan Pyett led the way with his first career hat trick. The win vaults the Pats into third place in the East Division, only two points back of Swift Current for second spot.

The rematch goes tonight at the crushed can in Moose Jaw. Wish I could be there, but the ever-popular previous commitments are keeping me in Regina tonight.

I noticed this website scrawled on a toilet stall wall in the Rainbow Room last night. Who is the proprietor of this site? And can we meet somewhere sometime soon??

The Pats have played pretty good lately. It is no surprise a little more attention to defense has been the reason for the turnaround. This team does not have enough talent to run and gun. They has some speed and should be able to score from opportunistic chances. If they stay committed to defense they will do well and if they go back to the old ways they will not.

After they got up 5-0 the team started to freelance and go for more goals. That caused people getting caught deep and unable to defend. Moose Jaw outscored then 4-1 the rest of the way and were one shot from making it a real tight game. Up by 3 how can you give up a 2 on 1 with only 2 minutes left?

They didn't play tight enough to win in MJ, but came away with a point. They didn't add another loss in the loss collum either. They can go .500 if they can beat Lethbridge and start February in a position to make a run. Playing for a tie in the other building is good strategy (Jacque Lemaire's). It gives you two chances for the bonus point and no additional regular time losses.

If the Pats reinforce good defense and start playing tighter especially late in the game with a leed, they will do well. Most of the teams in the Western Conference play tight defense and three of them are in the CHL's top ten. I will take a 3-2 win over a 6-5 loss any day.
