The winds of change

It would appear the Danny Barrett era with the Saskatchewan Roughriders came to an abrupt end at B.C. Place stadium yesterday. If you missed it, or would prefer not to remember, the Riders were throttled 45-18 by the Lions in the CFL Western final. Yoda says she (no really, Yoda is a she. I was as surprised as anyone.) fell asleep during the 2nd quarter. Coincidentally, that's when the Riders dozed off too! Anyway, the Leos take on the Montreal Alouettes next Sunday in the Grey Cup, while the Green Gang begins what should be an eventful offseason.

It became painfully obvious yesterday that the Riders have gone as far as they're going to go under Coach Barrett. That's not a criticism of the coach, just an observation. And, let's face it, DB knows the Board of Directors was lobbying for his dismissal earlier this year. I would suggest a change might be in everyone's best interest.

Speaking of, I couldn't help but notice the Pats put forth their best 60-minute effort of the season Saturday night, in beating the Moose Jaw Warriors 5-2. Enigmatic forward Justin Bernhardt dressed for the Pats, but didn't take a single shift. Very interesting move by the coaching staff, and hopefully the obvious message was received by #41. Same deal with forward Levi Lind, who was a healthy scratch on Saturday night. The Pats host Portland tomorrow night, before launching a six-game west coast road swing.

After the first drive I was suspicious. After the first quarter I was concerned. After the first half I knew - Danny would stay with Joseph and watch the ship go down. Danny's loyal to his star players, but he never did know when to shake things up, and for that reason, we lost the home playoff game, and now a shot at the Cup.

Geez-Louise, where to begin???
This is like Groundhog Day and Double Deja-Vu. The last seven years are like a bad dream you can never wake up from.

Point - Roy Shivers is the main reason this team is where it is. Teams are built from the top down. In seven years all he has brought in is overall average talent and his .460 winning pct says so. It proves it. People should stop yapping already about what great talent he brought in. BECAUSE if he had have brought in great talent we would be a GREAT team, which obviously we are not. We have a couple of great players, a few good ones and the rest are journeymen. Whether we like it or not there has to be a bit of a mini rebuilding take place. A lot of guys who were good young guys seven years ago, may no longer be that. Think about this..Buono started in BC a year or two after Shivers with a very bad team and organization. In his five years there he has had them to the Grey Cup, what two or three times!!!!! We have been trying to get a home playoff game. Oh my God, I am starting to get ill again...

Point- Shivers miscues!!!!!!
Burris - He chose Greene over Henry.

Scott Flory - lied to Scott and srewed that up.

Clermont - didn't think he could play.

McCallum - didn't think he was worth a decent contract. BC did!

These are just a few that come to my head. Just think how much BETTER we would have been with those four guys. AND YES BURRIS IS A FAR BETTER QB THAN JOSEPH REGARDLESS OF THE LAST GAME IN CALGARY.

Lastly his unprofessional comments to York have done a lot of harm to the organization. He has painted Barrett into a corner by talking about his daily phone calls, he had maligned our fans because of the conduct of a very few, he has caused a Rider icon, Mr Sheppard to wear his heart on his sleeve and make some comments he probably didn't want to. He has probably caused some rifts in personel, and put Tillman in a very awkward position. Regardless of whether or not Tillman wants to keep Barrett, the question of loyalties is in question. Would Danny be listening to Tillman or Shivers?? Shivers likely cost Danny any chance he had at keeping his job. Shivers knows he is done in football at the management level.

Point - Is KJ a $ 400,000. QB ?? I don't think now or ever. I don't remember if he has been an All-Star down east but I am betting he never will be out here. The thing is we got him now and we are going to have to find someone to make a QB out of him. He is not there yet.

Point - Our D-line, our O-line, recieving corps, linebackers, DB's, kicking game, return game all need some upgrading. If the same group were to come back intact, the result would be the same. .500 Pct, out in the first or seconed playoff game and the nightmare would continue. We have to rebuild somewhat and people shouldn't be afarid of it..because we're not getting anywhere with talent Shivers has brought in, except sub 500 football.

Point - The Riders used to be known as a mean tough football team. We are now known as Canada's little darlings who are never quite good enough. We need more SIZE, TOUGHNESS, and overall MEANNESS. Kidd from BC pretty portrayed the Riders as a bunch of whimps. It has got to stop!!!. We have to get our MO-JO back as Austin Powers would say.

We will have to make a break from the past seven years and look at a new direction (excellence). A major shakeup is in order both coaching and players. If we let Tillman do his job I don't think it will take seven years to win the West Division.

Tom Shepherd is a Rider icon?

Other than that, can't say I disagree with much of what you've said. I'm definitely not sold on KJ as an elite quarterback in this league. Although having Burris would be just as - if not more - frustrating.

Roy Shivers - yes, he's definitely still having an impact around here. That needs to end. If cutting DB loose is a way of doing that, then so be it.
