This and that

Former Saskatchewan Roughrider bench boss Danny Barrett is heading back to the States. DB has landed a job as the quarterbacks coach at the University of Buffalo, under former CFL quarterback Turner Gill. Congratulations to him.

The Regina Pats continue to pile up the wins in the new year. The Pats blanked the Saskatoon Blades 3-0 last night, to move to eight points back of front-running Brandon in the WHL's East Division. Suddenly, the Pats goal of a first-place finish isn't so outlandish - especially with four games remaining against the Wheaties.

And the Moose Jaw Warriors fired Head Coach and all-around good guy Steve Young yesterday. A curious move, to be sure.

thoughts;

Steve Young being fired is no big surprise. 1-2 seasons is the average tenure of a MJ coach. The MJ board of directors have always proven to be pretty knee-jerk. If Chad Lang were smart, he shouldn't buy too many long term purchases.

The Pats are winning quite a bit lately. They have re-focused on more defensive, little bit boring, winning hockey. I love it and hope they keep it going. Coaches at every level have found that even in the NEW ERA of hockey, defensive hockey and the dreaded TRAP still work well. Look how after the push of last year the scores are starting to return to 3-2 type games.

I was a little disturbed at how Chris Cloud went after Festerling and attacked him last nite. Cloud got 4 mins and Festy 0. The thing is that I have been around hockey for over 40 years and know that was a deliberate attack directed by the coaching staff. He had 6 points the nite before. Everyone in the building knew what Molleken was doing. It is something he has always done. I have watched him over his two tenures with the Blades. I have never been a big fan of the guy!

Barrett finally got a job in the USA which is good for him and his family. He was down to the last CFL job available in Wpg. The rest of the teams obviously weren't overly impressed. It makes you wonder how good a coach the guy really was. I think having he and Shivers out of the picture and out of the league is a benefit for the Riders. It gives the Riders a good chance to create a new identity and new direction(above .500).

1) Yep. Pretty sure Curtis Hunt didn't shed too many tears the day he left there.

2) Yep. Whatever gets it done.

3) Yep, although I like Lorne personally and I think he's a fine coach. That stuff belongs back in the 70's and 80's.

4) I thought Danny Barrett was over his head as a CFL head coach. Nice guy, though. I wish him well.

I was in the stands in the 80's. I was never amused by 3&1/2 hr games. I can remember when that kind of stuff would have ended in a brawl. I think Stoez was real smart last nite. I think Klotz will see Stoez again. He may get a huge surprise the next time. If the boys continue playing tough defense they can do a lot of damage. They have enough speed and skill to do damage on neutral ice turnovers. It would be nice to see Elder get in the line-up. He would add something I think.

He might, but it'd be tough to work him into the lineup right now. I really like the mix up front, even with a couple of guys sitting out each night. Justin Scott and Levi Lind appear to be in a heated battle for that checking line centre spot. It'll be interesting to see who gets that role heading into playoffs. Looking forward to the games this weekend!

Hey Dudes,

The Pats will not go pass the first round, guarateed.

What's up with Matt Strueby, article in the LP was non-commital, the headlkines basically say he is signing....Parker then says it it is for next year, basically.

See him play, I think he could play in the league, but I think he is better off waiting the year to end and come in as a rookie, 2007/08.

His dad was quite a player, seen him lots with Saskatoon, should of played in the NHL.

Let me know watcha think??????????????????

If the Pats don't play better than last night they wont go far. The Pats were out coached last night. Kisio(ex-hhl er) had his guys ready to go, get the lead, take the crowd out of it, and play defense to victory. A text book road game. The Pats coaching staff did not have their guys ready and never found a way to respond.
The Hitmen didn't need too many shots or to force the issue because they had the lead.

I think it has been utter nonsense for people to start yipping about first place. They are only a short skid from not making the playoffs at all. Lets see about the last run; MJ twice, Swift Current and Saskatoon. All clubs below .500 in a weak division!!!! They come up against a tough Central Div club and fall flat on their collective faces. They are far from being an elite team and have a hell of a lot of work to do, just to make the playoffs!!

Matt Strueby will come to camp with the Pats next season. Hopefully his offensive abilities transfer to the next level. We'll see.

My points exactly on the post-game show last night, anonymous. The Pats were lulled into a false sense of security by beating the other weak sisters in the league. Last night reminded them what it takes to compete against stronger clubs. The coaches seemed to know, but the players apparently thought they could just throw their sticks onto the ice and walk away with two points. By the time they figured it out, it was too late.

Good point Pac Dude,

The Pats are not what everyone in Bloggerville are talking about. They will not advance past round one, listen to me now and believe me later!

Once they (Pats) started rolling and the bandwagon jumpers threw themselves onboard, I knew it was only a matter of time til they would skid out of control.

Pats should make the play-offs, but do not be disappointed if they are not.

As for the ANNUAL collapse in Moose Jaw. Young went in there last year as the new nice guy. the players responded and they went on a roll.

Young still remains very nice, classy in his departure from the UNFRIENDLY City. But the truth being told, he was running a one man show, asked for noooo input from his assistants, including Lemire, and he lost control of the team....they never responded to him!
