Thursday Cheers and Jeers

It's been a while - hopefully I remember how to do this!

Cheers
  • The Regina Red Sox. At this pace, we may not be winning a lot of championships around here this season, so congrats to the Sox for capturing their first.
  • Everyone associated with bringing about the facelift at Leibel Field. Can't wait to lead the Unicorns into battle there on Saturday!
  • Calvin Rhead at Krazy Kiley's. Cal and the guys down the street at Radio Centre are my "go to" guys for electronics. Their prices are great, and their service is outstanding!
  • The people who are choosing to remember former Pats captain Rick Rypien for the outstanding person he was, rather than judging him for the way his life ended.
Jeers
  • Anyone who still thinks less of professional athletes (or anyone) that struggle with diseases like depression. "Snap out of it" isn't a cure, people!
  • Saskatchewan Roughriders. Please turn this train wreck of a season around. Starting tonight in Toronto, please.
  • The bizarre phenomenon of parents registering their kids for sports, and then never showing up or informing anyone of their whereabouts/intentions. And they wonder why so many kids lack a sense of responsibility/accountability? Go figure.
As always, if you have anything to add to the list - feel free.

Depression can be caused by head injuries, like concussions. How many professional (or non-professional) athletes have ever had a concussion? There's probably a lot more such people with depression than we'll ever know about, because they're able to keep it under control with medication and therapy. Let's give all these people a cheer!

Also, cheers to:

Regina EMS and Regina General Hospital, for their quick, compassionate response and care. Cheers, and many thanks.

Jeers: a certain physiotherapist who treats stroke victims as though they are idiots. Heck, let's make that jeer for anyone who treats anyone with any illness as though they are inferior in any way because of it.

As a side note: it's the people who think depression is a personal failing who have the most problems with it when they're hit, because they refuse to admit it and get medical help. 1 out of 5 people will suffer some form of depression in their lifetime. 1 out of 10 people suffer depression at any given time. Those are big percentages. So there's a very good chance these people who condemn someone with this disease will someday suffer it themselves, if they don't already do so. Let's hope they talk to their doctor about it.
