Congrats on your WHL gig! They have obviously recognized what we the enlightened, have known for some time. I have often said NOBODY in these parts knows any more about the WHL than yourself. I have signed up!!

Wow, high praise! Thanks.

I should point out, I'll be writing the column on behalf of the Pats - so don't expect much in the way of stinging criticism. At least not right away :)

Actually Pete, I don't think any of your critiques were really stinging. Factual observations are not stinging criticisms unless your pretty thin skinned. I heard far worse in the concourse after being swept in four by the Hat.I have always found your posts to fair and accurate.

Guys like me who haven't seen this team win a league championship in 27 years can be critical. About 25 years since we've been to the league final and about the same for an eastern division championship. The stewards of this team over the past quarter century have squandered opportunities to return this franchise to it's rightful glory. If not for being grossly inept, how could one explain it. Kamloops, Kelowna, Kootney, Vancouver, Medicine Hat, Everett and Calgary have all had big success during that time. We on the other hand have had, well..... .500 hockey. The time to win was 15 years ago.

It was, and anything short of a long playoff run this year will have to be considered a failure.

Mind you, it's not a drought that's exclusive to Regina. With the exception of Moose Jaw's exciting run a couple of years ago, when's the last time a Saskatchewan-based team played in the WHL final? I tried finding the answer on the WHL site - which was an exercise in futility.

Without digging my old WHL guides out of storage, I believe Swift Current won the league in 1993. I also seem to recall Saskatoon making it once in the 90's. My memory gets a bit foggy at times.
In the early eighties, we were there three times in five years. Like the saying goes, I'm from Missouri, Show Me!!

Richie Hall seems to be a pretty stand up guy. He shouldered the blame for the poor defense in the last few games, well actually four games. Rocky Butler(6th string) also threw for about 300 yds in TO.
There is no doubt the defense has to play better down the stretch for this team to be a contender. The question is whether or not it has the personnel to do so. Kent and Eric have said this team is a work in progress. Maybe the 1st half success has created too high expectations. With other teams getting better along with the injury bug, we very well may still be in for a rough ride--er.

Saskatoon was in '92, against Kamloops. I was covering the Blades that year.

So, only one Saskatchewan-based WHL team has advanced to league final in the past 15 years? That's quite a drought!

I definitely believe many fans - and media types - believed the Riders were a whole lot better than they actually are. I know the coaches didn't buy into the hype, and I'm pretty sure the players didn't - or at least I hope they didn't. The truth is, they're a good team - very good most games - but still have a few holes to fill, on both sides of the ball.

Boy, we sure have become skeptical sports fans around here! I suppose that'll happen when winning becomes a pleasant surprise, rather than an expectation. I look forward to the days of expecting the Riders and Pats to win. I think we're just about there.

Oops, that's one team in 14 years. Math was never really my strong suit :)

I think that the Riders will still have a respectable season. It is always a guess how things will end up. Three teams are close and will fight for position to the end.

I can see how tough it must have been being an Eskimo fan while they were winning tons of Grey Cups.

After all the years of rebuilding since the Memorial Cup here, one could assume the Pats should have a shot at being league champions. We all however know what assume can mean. We will have the answer by the time they come home from the west swing.
