Pats hand out letters

The Regina Pats have selected 4th year defenceman Logan Pyett as the team's captain for this season. The assistants will be defenceman Craig Schira, and forwards Brett Leffler and Kirt Hill. No huge surprises, although I thought 2nd year defenceman Colten Teubert might be in line for an "A". I suppose that'll have to wait until next year.

No real surprises Pete, well maybe one comes to mind. Things don't always end up the way they start.

Yes I do agree with you that the Pats COULD break into the national ratings. But first they will have to prove they are an elite team in this league. After the 40 win season they were predicted to do very well last year, and we all seen what happened. Brent Parker said in the LP that if they didn't have a long playoff run then it would be a major disappointment, well........ They will have to prove now that they can an elite team like Vancover, Everett, The Hat.

Like last year they have the makings if it materializes. Coach Hunt has said some encouaging things. He wants his team to be defensive first and keep the goals out and the goals against down.(maybe a Brent Sutter influence?). If they play a tighter game they will have more success. The big thing is a good first 10 games, be much tighter and better on the road. If they can be at least .500 on the road and very good at home, who knows. They have the tools to be a contender but they did as well last year. I am really hoping for something big, but I will defer that sentiment until after the west swing.

Silly me, I almost forgot you want Schira shipped out of town on the next bus (or under it). I'll admit he took a step backwards last year, and had the hardest time of any Pats d-man in adjusting to the "new" rules. But I also think he can be a very effective junior player, with a nice mix of physical ability and a bit of offensive upside.

Curtis' comments in the paper today are encouraging. He definitely seems to have adopted a Brent Sutter-ish philosophy. Funny what a team can accomplish with a lot of hard work and attention to detail. If the "lettermen" buy into that philosophy, then hopefully the rest of the team will follow.

like they say if the leaders lead, the followers will follow. I last bought tickets to a league final 25 years ago so I will be cautiously optimistic. I hope the kids buy into the coach's new philosphy. A couple of wins on the weekend would be a great start. In my mind this is the year to put up or shut up.

Morning Pete - Just about drove into a parked car last night when I heard the Ticat/Stamps score.

Gutsy win in PA last night for the boys but at a heavy cost. They say Sauletis will be out up to 3 months. Often when guys come back they are also very tentative and I think Kaspars would be in that boat. What can he provide in half a season for them?

The thing is can the Pats afford to keep a 20 yr old and Euro spot open for half the season??? When he went down they got younger and smaller. It seemed that PA ware trying to run the Pats. Surprising how PA acted chippier with Stoez not in the lineup. In the WHL in order to be successful you have to have three quality 20 yr olds going for you. What's your take on this situation?

I heard last night that Keegan Dansereau was sent home by the Hitmen. That a always a dirge for a player and team. He is 31 goal guy and would an offensive help to someone. But who knows what baggage comes with the guy. Do you think Sauletis injury opens the door for the Pats looking at Insam gain or is he a part of the past?

Dansereau's a head-case. A very talented one, but I just don't see him buying into the Pats defence-first philosophy.

That's just awful about Sauletis. I'd really like to see the Pats bring in a big, bruising 20 year old in the meantime. Can't really expect Josh Elder to do all the dirty work up front.

I really don't see Insam being brought back. They need more "oomph" from that Euro spot. Hey, I hear Niko Snellman's still available!
