Everything will be under review

That is the most significant quote to come out of Rider Head Coach Kent Austin's post-game address to the media, following a 44-22 loss in Calgary this afternoon. The Riders were (pick one):

  1. Embarrassed
  2. Crushed
  3. Bombed
  4. Flattened
  5. All of the above

by the Calgary Stampeders, dropping Saskatchewan's record to 7-4. Once again, the Rider defence was unable to defend against the pass or stop the run. That doesn't leave many options, does it? Defensive back Jermaine Chatman was beaten more often than (insert predictable and probably inappropriate Michael Vick/dog joke here).

The offense was equally inept. Receiver D.J. Flick had a solid game. That concludes the list of offensive contributors, with the possible exception of tailback Wes Cates. I could go into excruciating detail about the blunders, miscues and generally awful performance of this team the past two games (and past five games for the defense), but I'll leave that to the coaching staff. As Austin said after the game - everything, and everyone, is under review after a performance like that. I think we can expect personnel (and probably tactical) changes this week. At least I certainly hope so! The fans have done their part by selling out the stadium for next weekend's game against B.C. It'd be darn handy if the team were to show up as well.

Too many turnovers and sloppy play defensively a bad stew....

Joseph didn't have a great game either, which is not a good omen for Riderland, though one suspects he'll bounce back.

Still two bad losses in a row, a very bad time to go into a losing skid.

Be interesting to see if BC can capitalize on the Rider loss and put some distance between the two teams and don't look now but those guys in the red uniforms are gaining ground fast...

Hey Pete, I predicted this last week. It is only going to get worse. BC and Calgary both have better talent than we do. Like you said earlier defense is ahead of offense early in the season. We cpaitalized early against teams that were struggling or playing with second stringers. We started giving up too much yardage in TO and it hasn't stopped.

They say BS baffles brains and I think we are in a big pile of the former. It is painfully clear we need the following: one or two DB's, one big linebacker, two quality d-linemen, one or two O-linemen, one taller reciever. The problem I think is still about personnel and finding those that can make plays consistently. It will likely be very difficult to obtain what we need at this point in the season.

I can not see us winning more than three games in the second half at the rate we are going. Two against Hamilton and maybe one more against Edmonton, but that may be a chore if Ray throws for 350 yards again. I think we will be 10-8 and finish in third place. We are one weekend from being in third place, and that's where will stay.

I'm very curious about whether Kerry Joseph is injured. He's only run twice (by my unofficial count) in the last two games. If he's not injured, why the hell isn't he being utilized to the full extent of his abilities? Don't tell me we're trying to make a pocket passer out of KJ. Talk about a square peg in a round hole!

You may have something there Pete. He took some real sticks on Labour Day and again in Winnipeg. The Bombers are big and they hit hard. I remeber one where he didn't go down but you kew he was reaaly whacked. In the last two games he hasn't run and we have been slaughtered in both.

Here is food for thought. In the seven years of the Shivers/Barrett regime this team was overall sub .500 but we will call it a .500 team for argument sake. During most of that time Richie Hall was the defensive coordinator. We were never able to win anything with the defense we had. We had some decent players and some good games in there but when the chips were down, our D never got it done. The last year Burris was with us, we could have won with any kind of defense in BC but we couldn't stop anything that day. Burris did his part but the D didn't do its. The prevent defense he employs with small people only seems to prevent us from winning. I have heard he is a nice guy and a defensive Guru. I wouldn't question the former but I have some real issues about the defensive guru thing. I am not convinced!

I'm a little creeped out by your ability to read my mind!

If the personnel changes, and the results stay the same - then what is a logical person supposed to think?

Richie is a heck of a nice person, by the way.
