Hanging by a thread

The Regina Pats are on the brink of playoff elimination, following last night's 2-1 overtime loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers. Linden Rowat was heroic in goal for the Pats, who were undone by the Tigers' speed, and the referees' whistles. The Pats were forced to kill off two 5 on 3 situations, and the winning goal came on yet another Medicine Hat powerplay. Note to zebras: The Tigers are a terrific team. They probably don't need your help.

But enough about that. The simple fact is, the Pats haven't been good enough in this series - and are now on the verge of being swept. Here's hoping they have at least one terrific effort left in them this season. Game four goes tomorrow night at the Brandt Centre.

Pete - really could anyone have expected much more? The score flattered the boys and if not for Rowatt, this is over by the 10 minute mark of the first. The guys gave it all they had but in reality they have very little.

The Tigers are a fast skating, very skilled group. They are also very strong on the puck and have quick sticks. The Pats only have these qualities in limited amounts. Remeber last year the Blades went out in four after knocking us off in six. They also had Setoguchi, Rabbit and other stars and were still blown out. We don't have that level of talent so how can we compete. Speed kills and we are clearly lacking it contrary to the popular belief of some.

Fact - we are not as good as the Tigers. Another fact - we are not as good as anyone in the Central Division. We were an 80 pt team in a very weak loop, we were below .500 for much of the season and only secured a playoff spot with about a week to go. We lost all four regular season games to the Tigers and I am sure will be done on Friday night. We are simply put not good enough. This is like the second cycle since the Mem Cup and we are still a long way from the promised land. Remember we were told a few months back that this team was going to go far and compete for a title....Maybe a golfing title! They traded and traded and traded. The Fab 5 vanished into thin air along with another rebuild effort. This years edition will end up looking like so many more before them. It appears Parker and crew can never get it right.

Eberle, although not a great skater can score when around the net, Tuebert will be a stud d-man and Rowatt has started to prove his worth. The thing is two of those kids are 16 and one 17. They are two or three years away(another rebuilding cycle). What between now and then? Alot of people are tired of rebuilding cycle after rebuilding cycle with no results...change must come.

Morning Pete. Today may be a lucky day for you. I just read on Pedersen's site he won't take anonymous posts any longer. I guess Parker got to him. I'm sure his posts will drop by 80-90% which should be good for you. I think it comes from a rule in a bannana republic state which requires voters to sign their ballots, and if we are lucky maybe we can have it in Canada. I hear its good for controlling public opinon. I think we should expand it even further and be forced to wear name tags (with addresses) on our outer garments. We should also be forced to sign in when going to Pats and Rider gams.

He already has the ability to delete posts he doesn't want. This is just a cheap form of intimidation so as to restrict posts to the rah..rah..crowd. What he doesn't understand that most people have no trouble giving their names and most are proud of who they are. Many out there have forgotten more about the Pats and Riders than he will ever know. There however many serious kooks out there who can look you up in the phone book and then harass the hell out of you. Like some moron who doesn't like your anti Rider or Pat post and starts the harassing calls to you or your family. And what if your boss is a big fan and doen't like your post, it could impact your employment. It is utter BS and shows what some people are willing to do to control opinion. Classless!!! Oh well like I said, it's going to benefit you. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for the kudos!

I don't know Rod's rationale - maybe it has something to do with the anonymous poster who called for Al Dumba and I to be dumped from the Pats broadcasts. He/she even called me the worst sportscaster in town! Didn't know I was a sportscaster, but oh well...

I have no beef with anonymous posts, as long as they don't get stupid or threatening. That's when the "delete" button comes into play.

Yes Pete I read that post about you and Dumba. It was just plain stupid so please ignore that crap. Both of you guys do a great job. I am particularly fond of your concise analysis of the games. You seem to tell it like evryone sees it.

I agree that threatening or very stupid posts have no place in blogland. Thats what delete buttons are for. There also remedies through law enforcement and internet providers.

Some comments are very succinct and born of years of frustration. The Riders haven't won a Grey Cup since 1989. The Pats haven't won a Memorial Cup since 1974. Its been over 20 years sice they have even been to a league final. I think those of us who have supported these teams for 25 plus years can make whatever comment is reasonable and based on facts. I do not however need some twisted kook calling my home because he got my name off a blog. Again thanks for the good work and I will encourage others to go to your site.

Thanks!

Although I haven't lived in Saskatchewan all my life, I have cheered for the Toronto Maple Leafs since early childhood. So I feel the pain of Rider and Pats fans. Enough already!

And yet, that hardcore group of diehards (approx. 12,000 Rider fans and 2,500 Pats fans) never waver in their support of their teams. Each year they buy their season tickets and merchandise, and attend team events in the community. That loyalty deserves to be rewarded, and soon. In the meantime, darn right they're entitled to blow off a little steam!
